On the 8th of June 1996 Steffi Graf won her fifth French Open title. On a humid day at Roland Garros after an epic struggle with Arantxa.
It was the longest (at the time) women’s final in the history of the French Open tennis championships. It lasted over 3 hours and 40 games. Steffi eventually came through 6-3 6-7(4-7) 10-8.
Afterwards an emotional Steffi rated this match as the finest match she and Arantxa have ever played, even more spectacular than the 1995 Wimbledon final.
