Gabriela Sabatini won her first, and only, Grand Slam tournament beating Steffi Graf 6-2 7-6 (7-4) at Flushing Meadow in early September 1990. It was a great performance by Gaby as Steffi had been playing really well, dropping only one set on the way to the final. The head to head was 18-3 in Steffi Graf’s favour.
Gabriela Sabatini took the first set in just 32 minutes making only 6 unforced errors. The second was much tougher with Steffi having two set points but not being able to convert either. Gaby eventually won the match with a forehand down the line after a brilliant drop volley got her to match point. It was a well deserved victory for Gabriela Sabatini.
